Major chaos started the day, Friday when an articulated lorry owned by Mathew and Sons was involved in an accident at the junction of Springhill and Old Market.

The lorry, a tanker unit had to take emergency avoiding action when a group of boys came tearing down Springhill on roller skates and were unable to stop quickly enough to avoid the tanker. The driver of the tanker, Mr G B Nettles clipped the curb and toppled the tanker onto it's side, spilling it's entire cargo of ready made instant coffee (still warm) all over the road. Never before had such an incident happened on the streets of Nailsworth, necessitating Inspector Oldmarket to gather together his extensive collection of road side cones to cordon of the area and prevent any further accidents, while at the same time muttering something about oscars and sierras into his police radio.

A man from the environment agency was called in to access any potential damage to the river. He concluded that as there was more river than coffee, it (the coffee) would be diluted enough not to cause too many problems for the fish. The fire brigade were asked to help clear up the coffee spill with powerful hoses, which they did.

The town centre was closed for five hours while heavy lifting equipment was called in to remove the tanker. Fortunately the boys on the roller skates were unhurt.
