Yesterday, Friday the town was witness to a rare but noisy spectacle. Two military fighter planes (either F14 Tomcats of F15 Strike Eagles - they weren't red arrows in any case) got hopelessly lost while flying over the town during the afternoon.
Around they went, one after the other probably about four times in total. One of them even fired up his afterburners, giving an interesting exhibition of a flaming inferno. Eventually they managed to meet up with each other and flew away. You could still hear them though, presumably going around in circles again somewhere else. They must of been very lost.
The Nailsworth Chronicle, as ever curious about such things, spoke to the information officier at the Nailsworth Ministry of Information (NMOI) to find out what was going on and if the pilots were indeed as lost as they looked. A very 'British' well spoken gentleman named Roy Johnson said he was sorry, but he was not allowed to give out that sort of information, especially to rags like the Chronicle and suggested that we mind our own business in the future.
To us that is an admission if ever there was one, that the jets were indeed well and truly lost. The attitude of the Nailsworth Ministry of Information was pretty well what we expected. They have a history of being utterly unhelpful. We just thought that what with it being Christmas they just might have been a little more forthcoming on this occasion.
After this, we sort of lost interest and went on to investigate some other more interesting news instead. That's not to say that we won't later be investigating the NMOI in the near future...
Incidently the title of this piece is based on the assumption that it was the RAF that were lost. This is a guess. It could of been the American USAF.
We don't have a photo of the jets, we did not have the camera ready, but we can show you a photo of the NMOI. By the state of the building it looks as if it could do with a lick of paint, buy maybe this is all part of some great plan.
