This by now probably famous blot on the landscape has finally been taken down. If you didn't see it, you probably heard it. Work started early on Sunday morning, a couple of weeks behind schedule, and in no time at all the whole building has been demolished (2/3rds of it actually). The centre section and the part next to the bank. The recently rebuilt section on the A46 is still standing.

The developer, Colburn Homes plan to rebuild the front elevation of the building as close as possible to how photographs show it in 1926, when it is thought that the frontage was built. The new building will be a mixture of retail units with 1 and 2 bedroom flats (they call them apartments) above. The proposed numbers are for 9 retail units and 28 apartments, according to information on their web site.

I have a communication from Colburn Homes which states that the flats will have a 999 year lease, and will probably be between £90,000 and £140,000 each, although this is yet to be confirmed until after construction. The units should be ready in July - August 2002. Dusting off the old Nailsworth.com calculator and doing a few simple sums, show that if your a first time buyer looking for a one bedroom flat you will need to be earning around £25,700 a year. Nuff said.
