Nailsworth Freeze - A Cold Report. January 1st 2002

The new year saw the UK gripped by severe cold weather and Nailsworth is no exception. While most of the UK has had plenty of snow, we seem to have missed anything of significance in the snow department.

However, we have had our fair share of cold weather, with temperatures dropping to almost -7 °C in the early hours of New Years day leaving everything frozen solid until warmed up by the sun, of which there was plenty.

The picture shows the familiar site of Cherington Lake, transformed into a sheet of ice. Both adults and children, in fact from my observations it seemed to be mainly the adults spent much time chucking rocks or old bits of wood onto the ice. This makes a quite interesting sound!

A cold trip into Woodchester Park the day before showed the same story, all the lakes had frozen over with a very slippery layer of ice. And again the most popular pastime seemed to be to chuck whatever came easily to hand onto the ice!

Moving through the park it was easy to think that you were in another country, such as Canada. The scenery really was at it most spectacular. The third image taken in the park totally fails to give any impression of what it really was like, you just had to be there.
